Interesting Quote on Communitylend Site

Submitted by Dan on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 11:15

I'm not sure if they did a small update to their site or not (for some reason, things look a bit updated to me, but I still don't see a board of advisors posted), but here is a funny quote from their borrow site:

Today in Canada, when you ask your financial service provider for a loan they tell you what your interest rate on your loan will be. There is no negotiation."

A WHAT??? I am not sure if I really agree with this. Banks' loan portfolios, being the profit centres that they are, means that rates are _always_ negotiable. The posted rate is always a starting point. Unless you're getting a loan for $100 from a bank, where it is almost a waste of their time (and probably your's) to haggle over interest rates to save a few percent, rates are always negotiable. Even if you cannot get them to lower their interest rate, you may very well be able to get them to give you a free chequing account or some such.

So, here's a bit of financial advice: Whenever getting a loan, talk to every bank (and credit union!) in town and in nearby towns, even if they claim to have "no haggle every day low rates". That's a lie. And negotiate, negotiate, negotiate!!! I have even heard of loan situations where a customer was playing off different branches of the same bank off of eachother. Of course, for a mortgage, every 0.01% point adds up. Just be sure to value your time and know when it is appropriate to spend hours and days getting lower rates and when it isn't.
